Multi-function products multiply the failure points

A combination unit is a brew system, a grinder, a milk frother, and a water heating element in one housing. Four subsystems. Four sets of seals. Four failure points. If any one underperforms, the entire product gets a one-star review.
And the more subsystems you pack in, the more your QA process has to scale. A single-function product needs one spec sheet. A combination product needs four. If your QA team is still working from the single-function playbook, you're going to miss things.
The same applies to water filtration. A PurePlus under sink water filter is a category where customers have almost no way to evaluate quality at the point of purchase. You can't see whether the filter media is packed correctly. You can't test at the shelf whether the carbon is properly activated. All you know is that six months in, your water either tastes fine or it doesn't. And if it doesn't, you don't blame the filter cartridge. You blame the brand on the box.
The question isn't whether a brand can afford better components. It's whether it can afford not to. A slightly better seal costs pennies. A customer telling three friends their dishwasher leaked costs... not pennies.
The thing customers believe that isn't true
Now here's the counterintuitive part. We spend enormous energy worrying about whether customers will notice quality problems. But the reality is messier: customers often can't tell real quality issues from imagined ones. And that's somehow worse.
Consider the "does putting batteries in the freezer help" question. I've heard it dozens of times. The idea is that cold slows the chemical reactions inside alkaline batteries, extending their life. Sounds plausible. Mostly wrong. Modern alkaline batteries don't benefit from freezing, and condensation upon thawing can actually degrade the terminals. But the myth persists because it feels scientific.
Why bring this up? Because it proves something about customer perception: people build trust on stories and half-truths, not spec sheets. If a customer believes their freezer is "supposed to" preserve batteries, and it doesn't, that's a data point against your refrigerator—whether or not the refrigerator had anything to do with it. Quality isn't just what you build. It's what customers believe you built.
"But cheaper components work fine"
I know the argument. I've had it with procurement teams more times than I can count. "The budget seal has a 98% pass rate. Why pay 40% more for the premium one?"
My answer, and it took me a while to get comfortable saying it out loud: 98% isn't good enough when "failure" means a service call, a bad review, and a customer who now associates your brand with inconvenience. That 2% isn't a rounding error. It's 2 out of every 100 customers who won't buy from you again.
And here's the thing—the numbers said go with the cheaper option. My gut said the failure mode was worse than the spreadsheet assumed. We were mid-launch on two product lines, no time to wait for a full supplier audit. I went with my gut, switched suppliers, and our service call rate on that product line dropped noticeably within two quarters. I don't have a clean ROI number to give you. What I can say is that fewer angry phone calls is its own kind of return.
What this actually means

The part you can't see is the part your customer will remember, usually because it failed in a way they couldn't predict and you didn't prevent.
Ask who makes your appliances. Ask what the actual tolerance is, not the advertised one. Then ask whether the money you saved on components is worth the trust you'll spend when the first one fails.
It usually isn't.
